Box Office: 'Blade Runner 2049' Tops $200M; 'It' Passes $666M Global
The top holdover is Boo 2!: A Madea Halloween, giving Lionsgate the top two spots this weekend with resurrections of their defining 2000’s-era franchises. The Tyler Perry film is playing less like a seasonal treat and more like a Tyler Perry film. It earned $10 million (-53%) in its second weekend for a $35.5m ten-day total. No one was expecting as leggy a run as last year’s Boo! (especially with Jigsaw and Happy Death Day in the arena), but the $25m-budgeted film may have to wait until post-theatrical to make a profit.

Warner Bros. and Skydance's Geostorm kicked butt in China ($34.5 million over its opening weekend), but it sank like a stone in North America. The Gerard Butler sci-fi fantasy about weather satellites running amock earned $5.675m (-58%) in its second weekend, giving the $120m movie a $23.5m ten-day total. At least Geostorm will outgross the other WB actioner about villains controlling the weather. The Dean Devlin offering has earned $113m worldwide, so it still has some work to do.

Blumhouse and Universal/Comcast Corp.’s Happy Death Day earned $5.09 million (-45%) in its third weekend for a terrific $48.3m 17-day total. That’s a fine figure for an original, $5m horror movie, and it should easily outgross Ouija from three Halloweens ago. Oh, and it has earned $20m overseas, giving the old-school slasher flick a $68m global cume. In equally optimistic news (skipping around for a moment), the genuinely terrific Only the Brave earned $3.45m (-42%) in its second weekend for an $11.9m ten-day total. Those aren’t good numbers, but I am slightly encouraged by the hold for Sony’s firefighter drama. I’ll take what I can get.

Alas, Blade Runner 2049 performed terribly in China, earning just $7.6 million over the weekend. The Sony/Alcon release has earned $81.3m in North America courtesy of Warner Bros,/Time Warner Inc. And now, with a $16.6m overseas weekend, it has earned $223.5m worldwide with $250m now all-but-impossible even with a solid $2.7m debut in Japan. Again, if this film had cost maybe half that $150m budget, this would be a solid figure for a 2.75-hour, R-rated, adult-skewing sci-fi tone poem.

STX Entertainment’s The Foreigner earned $3.21 million (-44%) in its third weekend for a $28.827m 17-day total. The Jackie Chan/Pierce Brosnan action drama has earned at least $118m worldwide on a $35m budget. It earned $2.465m (-28%) in its eighth weekend, clearly getting a Halloween boost for what is now a $323.7m domestic total. It’s going to pass Suicide Squad ($325m) and may overtake Batman v Superman ($330m). Oh, and it ended Halloween weekend with $666m worldwide. Cute.

Same Kind of Different as Me earned $1.235 million (-52%) over its second weekend for a $4.759m ten-day total. The Snowman earned $1.18m (-65%) in its second weekend for a $5.766m domestic and $30m worldwide cume. Victoria and Abdul has now earned $51 million worldwide courtesy of Focus and Universal, again making it the only would-be Oscar contender that's actually a hit this season. A24's The Florida Project expanded to 145 theaters and earned $539k (-10%) for a $2.149m 24-day cume.

Breathe earned $516,000 (+217%) and brought its 17-day cume to $379k, while Goodbye Christopher Robin expanded to 213 theaters and earned $330k (+115%) for a $633k 17-day cume. And, alas, Battle of the Sexes ended its sixth weekend with just $12 million domestic. Finally, Killing of a Sacred Deer earned $221.5k (+92%) in 33 theaters for a new $392.4k ten-day cume.

Next weekend begins the holiday season, with Walt Disney's Thor: Ragnarok opening on Friday while STX Entertainment's A Bad Moms Christmas debuts on Wednesday.
